Christmas Prayers for the Family – Some Ideas
Encourage your family to focus on love during the Christmas season because God sent Jesus in love for all people (John 3:16). Pray and look for opportunities for the family to extend themselves to people they come across. Allow every handshake, touch on the arm, or hug to be a chance to point others towards God. These simple, ordinary gestures at any time of the year can transform lives and initiate faith.
- Our prayers can
focus not only on Christ’s past birth, but also on present world events
and personal concerns. When you remember those lowly shepherds and
Christ’s impoverished birth, think of the forgotten poor of our world. [1]
- Commit the coming
year to God. Ask Him to watch over your family and protect them from harm.
- Thank God for
sending His son Jesus to earth to provide an eternal home in heaven for
those who accept His gift.
- The Christ Child,
Joseph, and Mary remind our broken society of the importance of family.
The unified family can grow spiritually together before God. Christmas is
a perfect time for family members to bond. The season introduces us to the
rich traditions of people throughout the world, reminding us of the unity
of all Christians as children of God.
Sample Prayer
Father and Mother: “God of kindness, Jesus your Son came to make
his home among us, through his birth, you have brought humanity close to you.
Through his life for others, you have revealed your will. Through his death and
resurrection, you have transformed us into a new people.
Merciful God, remembering Jesus’ way
of love, we give you our lives: our concerns, our work, our loves. Receive our
offering; when it is lacking,
inspire us to recall once again the
open heart of your Son and to fulfill his desires in all that we do.
May we daily open a place in our
hearts to welcome the coming of Jesus, so that our faith will live in flesh
and, when he returns in glory, we will be one with you, our loving God.
Amen.”
Sons and Daughters : “Jesus, to touch our hearts you put aside your divine glory and became a child. To repair a broken world, you embraced our poverty. To bring us the friendship of God, you offered yourself to your Father and emptied yourself on our behalf.
Jesus, as we remember the day of your
birth, we want to respond to the love you have shown us. Come and live in our
hearts today. Help us build a world where people make their own the thoughts of
God’s heart: letting the oppressed go free and breaking every yoke. May your
love reign in human hearts everywhere.
Amen.”
All: Glory be
to the Father…
Christmas Song
O
Holy Night (by Adolphe
Adam)
Oh Holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
Oh night divine. Oh night when Christ was born;
Oh night divine, Oh night divine.
